What Is a Cantilever Pool Table?

A cantilever pool table is one where the playing surface appears to float. Instead of resting on four legs at the corners, the table is supported by a single base set back from the edges, so the top extends out over open space. The result looks more like sculpture than furniture, a piece that changes the feel of an entire room.
At Revolutionary Billiards, the cantilever is one of our signature designs. Here's what makes it different, and what to consider if you're thinking about one for your home.
Why a Cantilever Design Stands Out
Traditional pool tables are built around four legs. They work, but they look like what they are. A cantilever table removes the legs from view and lets the lines of the table speak for themselves. The angled base draws the eye, the top seems to hover, and the whole piece reads as a design statement rather than game-room equipment.
It's a natural fit for modern and contemporary homes: open floor plans, clean architecture, and spaces where every piece is chosen with intention.
The Engineering Behind the Look
A pool table is heavy. A real playing surface is built on slate, and it has to stay perfectly level for years of play. Making that weight appear to float takes careful engineering. The base has to be designed so the table is completely stable, with no wobble and no sag, while still keeping that open, floating profile.
That's where design and craftsmanship meet. Every cantilever table we build is engineered in-house and hand-built in our Largo, Florida shop, so the structure is as precise as the finish.
Materials and Finishes
Because a cantilever table is meant to be seen from every angle, materials matter. Our recent installations have paired brushed metal rails with a high-gloss wood base, and finishes, cloth colors, and dimensions can all be tailored to the room. Many clients also add a matching cue rack or accessory wall so the whole game room feels designed as one.
Is a Cantilever Pool Table Right for Your Space?
A few things to think about:
Room size. Like any pool table, a cantilever design needs enough clearance around it for comfortable play. Our Room Sizes guide can help you plan.
Style of the home. Cantilever tables shine in modern, contemporary, and minimalist interiors, though the right finishes can make one work in a warmer, transitional space too.
Working with your designer. Many of our tables are specified by interior designers, and we're happy to collaborate on finishes and dimensions so the table fits the project.
